A Disturbing Silence

The about 1.4 million candidates who performed poorly in the recently released Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations(UTME) have only given flesh to the suspicion, all along, that qualitative education in Nigeria is almost extinct. Parents and guardians who channeled their energy and financial resources to ensure that their children and wards scale through the examinations, successfully, have continued to lament over the huge amount they expended on the examinations. Of worry, is the continued silence of the Federal government on the issue. This is a disturbing threat to democracy, considering the allocation to the education sector in the 2024 annual budget.

The use of alcohol, illicit substances and hard drugs by students and youths has reached an all-time high in different parts of Nigeria. It has in fact become a social problem and menace. Indeed, in states where Those-in-Charge generate revenue from illegal structures, illicit substances and alcohol are sold in makeshift kiosks along the road, under bridges and motorparks. Democracy in the Claws of Dictatorship

When the Government is desperate and resolute to cling to power, in the face of the unfavorable outcome of elections, election and the existence of political parties opposing the government do not constitute evidences of democracy. Indeed, a number of countries have the forms of democracy, but the reality of dictatorship. Without doubt there is a vital difference between democracy and dictatorship, however, it varies from one country to another.
